For me ‘Lie Down My Love’ is not only a song but a story of an inner journey.
This song came about in many forms and has changed a lot over the time that I have been playing it. I started with the chorus of the song which was inspired by a line from a Langston Hughes poem that goes ‘Oh Silver Tree, oh shining rivers of the soul, silver tree.’ From this line I had an image of a pair of young lovers together under the branches of an old tree and from that came the story of these two characters and their journey together.
The song has an overall feeling of melancholia as at the start they are happy and fulfilled in each other’s company but by the end of the song I feel that life has pulled them in different directions and they still love for each other but things haven’t worked out as they might have hoped at the beginning. I think many of us have been in a similar situation which is why this song speaks so much to me and I hope will also speak to you!
